CITY OF BEAVERTON STAFF TO PRESENT AT OREGON MEDIATION ASSOCIATION ANNUAL CONFERENCE
Posted: October 22nd, 2012 3:55 PM
Mary Lind, from the city of Beaverton's Dispute Resolution Center (DRC), will present during the Oregon Mediation Association Annual Conference in Portland on Friday, Nov. 2 from 10:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Lind's workshop is titled Homeshare Mediation: Crafting Durable Housing Agreements for Homeless Youth and highlights the innovative partnership between the city's DRC, Shared Housing and the Beaverton School District.
The workshop demonstrates the leadership role that community partners can play in developing and implementing creative responses to challenging community issues. Lind will be joined by a panel made up of a DRC volunteer mediator, a student, and home provider who have been through the mediation process as part of the Second Home program.
"I'm proud that we're helping educate others on ways to create stable housing options for our homeless youth," said Mayor Denny Doyle. "We're working hard to lend a hand to kids who are facing difficult situations. Our Dispute Resolution Center's Second Home program has enjoyed an astounding success rate--90 percent of the contracts were successfully completed."
The DRC program connects homeless high school students who are committed to staying in school with homeowners willing to share their homes.
Three-hour facilitated dialogues and mediated negotiations produce rental agreements, house rules, and better mutual understanding among strangers who will share a home for the school year.
