Oregon State Police Troopers are continuing the investigation into Friday afternoon's fatal traffic crash that resulted in the death of an adult male and critical injuries to his male passenger. Both names are released in this update.

According to Sergeant Jeff Allison, on September 14, 2012 at approximately 1:35 pm., a 2004 Dodge Ram 2500 pickup driven by LOUIS V. JOHNSON, age 82, from Cave Junction, was northbound on Interstate 5 near milepost 47 when it collided into the rear of a 2003 Dodge pickup driven by MATTHEW C. BOWDEN, age not available, from White City. After impact, the Dodge Ram pickup swerved to the left into the center median and then skidded back across both northbound lanes where it rolled on the east side shoulder before coming to rest on its top in a drainage ditch with running water.

Both occupants from the Dodge Ram pickup were extricated by Rogue River Fire and Rescue person. JOHNSON was pronounced deceased at the scene. His right front passenger, DANIEL J. NOTTER, age not available, from Cave Junction, was transported by air ambulance to Rogue Valley Medical Center in Medford with critical injuries.

BOWDEN and his passenger, NICOLE BOWDEN, age not available, was not injured.

All were using safety restraints.

Traffic was reduced to a single lane northbound lane for about 2 hours during the investigation.

Oregon State Police troopers from the Grants Pass and Central Point offices are continuing the investigation. Rogue River Fire & Rescue, Mercy Flights and ODOT assisted at the scene.
