This summer marks the one year anniversary of Crossfit 1850, a Crossfit gym opened at the Oregon City Police Department, by its officers. Crossfit focuses on constantly varied, functional movements as the basis for exercise--which is why it is perfect for law enforcement professionals. Police officers never know what they will encounter; a typical day can include a physical fight, a foot pursuit, pushing a car or having to lift somebody from the ground. Police officers must be ready for anything.
While many departments have treadmills and some mixed collections of weights, law enforcement officers are now starting to see the tremendous benefit Crossfit has over the conventional way of working out. The Oregon City Police Department is the first law enforcement agency in Oregon to have a Crossfit affiliate in-house. In fact, we are only one of a handful across the country.
We started with a small group of officers, brave enough to try something new. As time went on and people saw the results of those participating, our small groups became bigger groups. Soon, we were consistently averaging around twenty individuals per workout. As a group, our members have lost hundreds of pounds. We have two individuals who have lost over 50 pounds and a large number in the 20-40 pound weight loss range. The team workouts have been great for team/department morale and building individual confidence. It has truly been a transformation for many.
While the benefits we see are tremendous, the ability for our employees to combat the overwhelming stresses of police work through exercise is paramount. At our department, we believe that healthy cops are happy cops. In turn, we also believe that happy cops are much better cops; officers who work more efficiently and show up for work in a better mindset. As a result, the officer our community sees on the street will provide a much better end product to the many community partners we serve.
The chosen name for our gym is a reference to the year 1850, when this department was established. Our understanding is that we are the oldest police department west of the Missouri River. We track our workouts and gym via the internet at www.crossfit1850.com.
On October 2, 2012, Crossfit headquarters will be putting on a seminar at the Oregon City PD Crossfit Gym. The class is open to law enforcement professionals and will focus on the benefits of Crossfit for those in public safety. The seminar notes read:
The goal of the CrossFit Law Enforcement Seminar is to educate and inspire Law Enforcement Officer's about the CrossFit methodology and program. Attendees will learn how Law Enforcement Agencies have successfully implemented a CrossFit program into their Academies and In-Service training days. The Seminar includes information on how to create a successful non-profit CrossFit Law Enforcement Affiliate. Attendees receive data, operational plans and talking points for accurate representation of CrossFit to their Administrators and peers. Lectures include programming, Law Enforcement training context, case studies and nutrition, as well as physical instruction on foundational CrossFit movements and their direct application to the demands of the Law Enforcement Profession. The day includes two team building workouts and an opportunity for Officers to network and forge winning partnerships between Agencies.

We feel honored to have been chosen as the location to host this seminar. We are proud to help break new ground in the health and safety of police officers.
