HILLSBORO FIREFIGHTERS RESCUE INJURED BUS DRIVER IN CRASH WITH CRANE

Hillsboro Firefighters extricated an injured school bus driver following a collision Thursday morning between the bus and a tractor-trailer carrying a large crane at the corner of NW Glencoe Road and Evergreen Parkway. There were no students on board at the time. When firefighters arrived shortly after 8:30, they found the tip of the crane embedded in the driver's corner of a Hillsboro School District bus and the bus tilted at about a 30-degree angle on two wheels. That angle prohibited the bus doors from opening. Bystanders had entered the bus through emergency exits to render aid to the driver.
HFD Firefighter/paramedics entered the bus to treat the patient while other firefighters deployed stabilization jacks to ensure the bus did not roll over. It took about 20 minutes to deploy equipment and remove the bus' passenger door so the driver could be extricated and transported by Metro West Ambulance to Legacy Emanuel Trauma Center. The driver was suffering from non-life threatening injuries. His identity is being withheld due to patient privacy laws.
Hillsboro Police, assisted by Washington County Sheriff's Deputies, are investigating the cause of the accident. Evergreen Parkway was closed for about 2 Â1/2 hours while north-south traffic on Glencoe was down to one lane. The bus was returning to the bus barn after its last stop at Liberty High School.
