Oregon State Police (OSP) troopers are continuing the investigation into the cause of a Wednesday morning two-vehicle fatal traffic crash that resulted in the death of an adult female on Highway 228 about three miles east of Brownsville. The victim's name will be released later to allow family additional time for next of kin notifications.

On August 15, 2012 at approximately 10:34 a.m. a red 1994 Dodge 2500 pickup driven by STEPHEN J. DIAL, age 54, from Springfield, was westbound on Highway 228 near milepost 9 when it crossed the centerline and collided head-on with an eastbound 2008 Chevrolet Equinox sport utility vehicle driven by a 62-year old woman. Preliminary information indicated the pickup may have been attempting to pass another vehicle in a no passing zone but that has not been confirmed.

The Chevrolet's female driver was pronounced deceased at the scene. She was using safety restraints and her vehicle's airbags deployed. A dog in the vehicle was not injured and later was taken to the Linn County animal shelter pending return to her family.

DIAL was transported by ground ambulance to Sacred Heart Medical Center at RiverBend with non-life threatening injuries. He was using safety restraints and his pickup's airbags deployed.

OSP would like to speak to any potential witnesses in the area at the time of the crash. Anyone with pertinent information is asked to call Trooper Jeff Moran at (541) 967-2026.

OSP was assisted at the scene by Linn County Sheriff's Office, Lebanon Police Department, Brownsville Fire Department, and ODOT. The highway was closed for 3 hours.
