TVF&R firefighters were called to back-to-back fires last night. The first fire occurred at 12:33 am at the Tualatin Village Condominiums located at 8446 SW Mohawk Street in Tualatin. The first arriving crew reported light smoke coming from a second-story bedroom window. Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire which was later determined to have been started by a cigarette that fell between a wall and bed. The fire caused approximately $30,000 in damage to the bedroom and its contents. The Red Cross was called to the scene to provide lodging to the five displaced occupants. TVF&R reminds the public that careless smoking or the improper disposal of smoking materials is the number one cause of fire fatalities in the United States. If you're a smoker, make sure smoking materials are disposed of in a non-flammable container and never smoke in bed.

The second fire was dispatched at 1:37 am after numerous calls to 9-1-1 reported a significant fire in a wooded area near Pheasant Lane in Aloha. The first-in unit from Station 61 in Beaverton, arrived to find a fully-involved house on a heavily treed lot, located at the end of a long driveway. Knowing the structure was not occupied and the home not savable, firefighters employed an exterior fire attack to extinguish the house fire, and protected nearby fir trees and a detached garage. Firefighters had to take extra precautions until a PGE lineman arrived, due to an energized power line down across the driveway. Firefighters had the fire under control within 30 minutes. Neighbors told firefighters that the home's occupants had moved out approximately two weeks ago. The home is considered a total loss and remains under investigation.
