Interstate 84 westbound lanes were closed Monday night for three hours while a commercial truck and semi-trailer burned on the shoulder east of Huntington in eastern Oregon.

According to Oregon State Police (OSP) Sergeant Mark Duncan, on August 27, 2012 at approximately 9:30 p.m. a 2000 Volvo truck pulling a semi-trailer loaded with syrup caught fire after its driver stopped on the westbound shoulder of Interstate 84 near milepost 365. OSP troopers and ODOT responded to the scene. The fire occurred outside of the local fire protection district so BLM fire response resources came to the scene to help suppress the fire. Both vehicles were destroyed.

The truck's driver, SUKHWINDER KANG, age 50, from Fairfield, California, and co-driver TYLER WINDELL, age 49, from Daly City, California, were not injured. They told troopers the fire appeared to start in the area of the truck's rear axle.

Both westbound lanes were closed until 12:30 a.m.
