At approximately 1356 this afternoon, Clackamas Fire District #1 received a report of a house on fire. A first alarm assignment was dispatched, including a fire engine from Portland Fire Bureau. Fire crews arrived at approximately 1401 to house with fire in the back of the house and an attic with heavy fire involvement. It was reported that the occupant had ignited a barbecue in the back of the house, using tree branches as fuel. After igniting the barbecue, the occupant went into the house. When he returned to the back of the house, he observed fire going up the back of the house to the attic and roof. Prior to calling 911, he placed a ladder at the back of the house, and attempted to extinguish the fire. Having no luck extinguishing the fire, he returned to the house and called 911. This action caused a delay in the fire department response. Firefighters were able to access the attic, and along with cutting holes in the roof, the fire was contained and controlled a
bout a half hour after the first engine arrived. There were no injuries.
Clackamas Fire District #1 would like to remind everyone to only use safe and approved fuel sources in a barbecue. Also, keep barbecues a safe distance from any structures, including eaves and overhangs. When discovering a fire that is out of control, safely evacuate everyone away from the fire area, and call 911 immediately, It is unsafe to attempt to fight an out of control fire.
