A 28-year old Salem man was arrested Satuday morning by Oregon State Police (OSP) troopers and Salem police officers on the grounds of the Capitol Mall across the the State Capitol building when officers responded to a report of a man swinging a 3-foot samurai sword. Mental health professionals were notified and a mental health examination is pending.

According to Senior Trooper Robert Dicey, on July 14, 2012 at approximately 7:23 a.m. a State Parks landscape employee reported a man holding a 3-foot samurai sword was walking in the Capitol Mall area between State Library and Public Service Building. The complainant said he felt threatened as the man got within several feet and was yelling obscenities as he swung the sword.

Salem police were first on scene and detained the man at gunpoint. OSP troopers arrived and took the man identified as THEODORE G. SANAROV, age 28, from Salem, into custody for Disorderly Conduct and Menacing. SANAROV was taken to Marion County Jail.
