As part of an on-going investigation, the Clark County Medical Examiner's Office Wednesday released the cause of death for a Clark County Jail inmate who died earlier this year.

Marius Asanachescu, 28, died Feb. 10, 2012 of homicide from asphyxia due to chest compression while being restrained by Clark County Jail Custody Officers who were attempting to prevent him from harming himself, the Medical Examiner's Office said.

Information from the Medical Examiner's Office indicates that Mr. Asanachescu sustained chest compressions while being restrained. The office also said psychosis was an underlying cause of death and obesity was a "significant condition."

Although homicide is sometimes used synonymously with the act of murder, homicide is broader in scope than murder, and does not necessarily constitute a criminal act. Homicide is defined in Washington State law (RCW 9A.32.010) as the killing of a human being by act or omission of another to include excusable or justifiable homicide.

According to jail records, Mr. Asanachescu was being held on a felony charge of second-degree assault - domestic violence. He was booked into jail on Jan. 30, 2012.

Vancouver Police Major Crimes detectives continue to lead the months-long investigation into Mr. Asanachescu's death. Additionally, the Clark County Sheriff's Office Internal Affairs unit is conducting its own investigation into the circumstances of the death and reviewing any applicable policies and procedures.

Custody officers present when Mr. Asanachescu died were put on routine administrative leave during the initial phases of the investigation and have since returned to work.

The investigation is continuing. No additional information will be released at this time.
