On Saturday July 14, 2012 at 1:11am, Washington County Sheriff's Deputies responded to a single vehicle crash on SW McCormick Hill Road in rural Washington County. Upon arrival, deputies located a pickup with two occupants. The driver 30-year-old Justin Starbuck of Dallas Oregon and his passenger sustained serious injuries. They were both transported to OHSU.

Upon further investigation, deputies learned that the driver, Justin Starbuck was intoxicated at the time of the crash. Mr. Starbuck failed to negotiate a curve. He went off the road, sheared off two trees and came to rest against another. Mr. Starbuck's BAC was .29, more than three times the legal limit.

He was cited for DUII, Assault IV, Reckless Driving and Reckless Endangering.

Every year the Washington County Sheriff's Office arrests about 1,200 alcohol and drug impaired drivers, which is an enforcement priority for the Sheriff's Office.

The Centers for Disease Control reports, "Every day, almost 30 people in the United States die in motor vehicle crashes that involve an alcohol-impaired driver. This amounts to one death every 48 minutes. The annual cost of alcohol-related crashes totals more than $51 billion."
