On July 23, 2012, at about 3:40 p.m., Clackamas County 911 received a report that a dog had fallen down a slope and was now stuck on a cliff.
The caller was initially transferred to the Oregon Humane Society Technical Animal Rescue Team (OHSTAR Team).
At about 4:19 p.m., dispatchers received a second call reporting that while finding a location to get cell reception to make the first call, the owner of the dog had gone down the slope to retrieve his animal and was now also stuck. The hiker was described as a male, approximately 65-70 years of age.
The location was described as being in the Zig Zag canyon on the Timberline Trail, about three miles from Timberline Lodge. The area where the hiker was stuck was described as being on a 45-50 degree slope of eroded rock. The hiker was stuck about 40 feet down off the trail.
The Clackamas County Sheriffs Office Search and Rescue Unit initiated a SAR operation and were assisted by OHSTAR, the AMR Reach and Treat Team (RAT Team), Portland Mountain Rescue, and Mountain Wave Communications.
At about 7:45 p.m., search teams located the hiker and dog, and were successful in getting them off the slope and back to the trail. There were no reported injuries to man or dog. They were able to walk back to Timberline Lodge under their own power.
The man was identified as Alan Rosenfeld, age 68, of West Linn, Oregon. The dogs' name was given as Ranger, a 4 year old Golden Retriever.
Mr. Rosenfeld reported to CCSO SAR personnel that he was on a day hike from Timberline Lodge to the overlook of Big Zig Zag Mountain, a hike he had done before with Ranger. He was aware of the requirement to have dogs leashed.
When he found his dog down a steep embankment, he told SAR personnel he had no second thoughts about going after his dog.
Mr. Rosenfeld expressed thanks and gratitude to all the search and rescue volunteers and CCSO deputies.
