Full Details
On Thursday, May 31, 2012, at about 2:51 pm, Tigard police detectives were conducting a criminal investigation that led them to 9470 SW 88th Avenue in the community of Metzger (this area is within the Enhanced Sheriff's Patrol District also known as ESPD.)
They knocked on the door and when 41-year-old Erik T. Sigvaldsen answered, the detectives recognized him. He was not the subject of their investigation, but he is a long-time criminal and is known by police in the area. Mr. Sigvaldsen immediately slammed the door and locked it. The Tigard detectives quickly contacted dispatch and had them check if Sigvaldsen had any warrants.
The Tigard detectives did the best they could to see every side of the house in case Sigvaldsen tried to escape. They were informed by dispatch that Sigvaldsen had felony warrants. Because Mr. Sigvaldsen was not the subject of their investigation and they were in unincorporated Washington County, they decided to hand off the primary role in apprehending Sigvaldsen and assist the Sheriff's office with the operation.
Sheriff's deputies responded to the scene. They learned that there was a gun in the house and that Sigvaldsen had a previous arrest for resisting arrest. Because of the circumstances they decided to call in the Washington County Tactical Negotiations Team (TNT) and the Washington County Hostage Negotiators Team (HNT).
Officers and deputies attempted make phone calls to the house but got no response. Eventually they broke out several windows and entered the house to look for
Sigvaldsen. He had escaped at some point during the operation, most likely right after his initial contact with detectives.
Sigvaldsen was found during a traffic stop a short time later. He was taken into custody on Highway 99W without incident. He has been booked into the Washington County Jail.
