UPDATE #2: NAME RELEASED - INVESTIGATION - MOTORIST SUFFERS GUNSHOT WOUND - INTERSTATE 5 NEAR TUALATIN (PHOTO)

Oregon State Police (OSP) is continuing the investigation into the apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound injury to an adult male during a traffic stop along the southbound lanes of Interstate 5 near the Nyberg Road overpass in Tualatin. The man's condition was upgraded to fair at Oregon Health & Sciences University and his name is released in this update.
The man is identified as JAMES HARVEY BEAVER, age 59. BEAVER previously lived in the Roseburg area, but currently has no permanent address and does have relatives and personal contacts in the Portland area. He had two self-inflicted gunshot wounds from a small caliber handgun.

On June 26, 2012 at approximately 5:16 p.m. an OSP trooper stopped a 1982 GMC van southbound on Interstate 5 near milepost 289 for a vehicle license violation. The trooper contacted the lone occupant, a 59-year old male, obtained identification and determined the driver had a suspended license. The trooper returned to his patrol car to prepare the citation and ordered a tow truck to impound the van.
As the tow truck was arriving at approximately 5:50 p.m. the trooper returned to the van to contact the driver and saw he had a gunshot wound to his neck and a handgun was lying on the right front passenger seat. The trooper retreated, requested backup and the southbound lanes were blocked as other officers from Tualatin Police Department and Clackamas County Sheriff's Office arrived to assist.
The man got out of the van when directed by officers and was detained. Medical personnel arrived and treated the man at the scene before transporting him by ambulance to the hospital.
Two of the 3 southbound lanes were opened to traffic at 6:15 p.m. The third lane was opened at 7:55 p.m.
An OSP Criminal Investigation Division detectives is leading the investigation.
OSP was also assisted at the scene by Washington County Sheriff's Office, Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue, and ODOT.
