THIRD CHILD FALLS FROM SECOND STORY WINDOW IN THREE DAYS
Posted: June 27th, 2012 6:08 PM

Approximately two hours after a 16 month old fell from his second story window in Oregon City, a second child fell from her second floor apartment while playing on the bed. The five year old female involved in the most recent fall was transported to OHSU with non life threatening injuries. In similar circumstances to the earlier Oregon City incident, this child was playing on a bunk bed positioned right next to an open window. A screen was in place but was easily pushed from its position, causing the child to fall 15 feet to a concrete walkway.

At 1551 this afternoon Firefighters from Clackamas Fire responded to the Lawnfield Garden Apartments at 9900 SE Lawnfield Rd in Clackamas after the incident was reported by a neighbor who heard the child hit the ground. Paramedics from Clackamas Fire and American Medical Response (AMR) arrived to find the child on the ground. Crews quickly loaded the child into the ambulance and transported to OHSU.

This is the third child who has fallen from their second story window since Monday within Clackamas Fire's service area. Both incidents today have involved a bunk bed positioned right next to an open window with no child locks.

IMPORTANT SAFETY MESSAGE
As summer weather approaches and inside temperatures rise, it is important to remember to secure your windows with child proof locks. While screens serve the purpose of keeping insects out of the home, they easily fail when being pushed on by unknowing children. Having commercially made window locks prevent the window from being opened past four inches, reducing the likely hood of a child falling out. Clackamas Fire would further like to remind parents to keep furniture and other objects that children may easily climb away from windows.
