GRESHAM, Ore. - On Tuesday the Gresham City Council approved a solid waste rate reduction for all single-family residential customers. Effective Aug. 1, Gresham residents will see a garbage bill decrease ranging from 25 cents to $4.45 per month depending on the level of service.
Council also approved moving to a fully automated cart system citywide, replacing customer-owned cans with hauler-provided carts at no additional cost to the customer.
"It's a rare opportunity to put money back into our customers' pocket today, while making improvements that will pay off in the future," said Steve Fancher, Gresham's Environmental Services Director.
With a fully carted system, garbage and yard debris collection will be easier, more efficient and safer for customers and workers, resulting in long-term financial benefits including reduced worker compensation costs and lower rates.
"This is historic as I can never remember having sat on Council on and off since 1996, that we've ever lowered rates. This is great news for our community. We still have the ability to sharpen our pencils to provide the best service we can", said Councilor David Widmark.
For a house with a 35-gallon garbage cart, a 60-gallon recycling cart and a 60-gallon yard debris cart, the new monthly rate will be $27.30.
"The timing is right to pass along these benefits to residential customers through system improvements and rate reductions," said Gresham Sanitary Service's Operations Manager, Matt Miller.
