COMMERCIAL TRUCK HITS COUGAR CAUSING DIESEL SPILL AND FREEWAY CLOSURE WEST OF THE DALLES
Posted: June 12th, 2012 11:19 AM

Interstate 84 westbound lanes west of The Dalles was closed for about six hours Tuesday morning while hazardous material responders cleaned up approximately 100 gallons of diesel spilled on the roadway after a commercial truck struck a cougar crossing the freeway.

On June 12, 2012 at approximately 1:14 a.m. a 1990 Peterbilt truck pulling a semi-trailer was traveling westbound on Interstate 84 near milepost 81 when it struck a cougar crossing the lanes in the darkness. After hitting the cougar, the truck's fuel crossover line was damaged causing diesel to spill onto the roadway. The truck's driver was able to plug the leak but not before a large amount of diesel spilled.

The 2-year old male cougar was killed.

Westbound traffic was diverted around the area while ODOT coordinated scene clean up until the lanes were open about 7:30 a.m.

OSP was also assisted at the scene by Mid-Columbia Fire & Rescue and The Dalles Police Department.
