Oregon State Police (OSP) troopers are continuing the investigation into Sunday afternoon's critical injury single vehicle traffic crash on Highway 221 just north of the Yamhill / Polk County line near Wheatland. The driver's name and current condition is released in this update.

According to OSP Sergeant Brad Hessel, on May 27, 2012 at approximately 2:55 p.m. a 2003 Ford F150 pickup driven by JUAN MANUEL AVALOS CAZARES, age 25, from Dayton, was southbound on Highway 221 near milepost 10. As the pickup negotiated a curve, the driver lost control traveling off the highway and colliding head-on into a large tree.

Dayton Fire District firefighters spent about one hour extricating and treating the injured driver at the scene. The driver, who was operating the vehicle with a suspended driver's license, was then transported by LifeFlight to Legacy Emanuel Medical Center. According to the hospital Monday morning, he is in critical condition. Safety restraint use is pending investigation confirmation.

OSP troopers from the McMinnville Area Command office are continuing the investigation.

Yamhill County Sheriff's Office and ODOT assisted at the scene. The highway re-opened about four hours after the crash.
