TVF&R PLANS CONTROLLED BURN AT HOME IN TIGARD TOMORROW
Posted: May 30th, 2012 3:35 PM

Residents in Tigard will see a column of smoke rising from a neighborhood tomorrow afternoon as firefighters conduct live fire training in a real home. This rare training opportunity allows firefighters from Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue to gain valuable experience practicing fire engine operations, building entry and search techniques and fire behavior training.
During the day-long series of exercises, training officers will set a fire in a room, firefighters will enter the home and extinguish it, and then training officers will set another fire. At the end of the day, firefighters will set a final "terminal burn" and the home will be allowed to burn to the ground.

MEDIA INVITED
Members of the media are invited to visit the training burn, videotape or photograph training, and tell the story about how firefighters use cutting edge techniques to battle fires and save lives.

Where: 13085 SW 76th Avenue, Tigard

Date: Thursday, May 31st

Timeline:

10:00 a.m. - Training burns commence and flames will be confined to the inside of the home. Media will see firefighters entering and leaving the home in air packs with hoses.

2:00 - 3:00 p.m. - Sometime between 2:00 and 3:00 in the afternoon, firefighters will begin their final burn. During this burn, firefighters will practice exposure protection techniques as the home is allowed to burn to the ground. This is the most spectacular part of the day, but earlier training burns provide different training.

HELMET CAM VIDEO AVAILABLE - TVF&R has helmet camera video available for distribution to the media shot inside a burning home that showcases the conditions that our firefighters encounter inside a structure fire.

"This is a great opportunity for our firefighters to experience the deadly heat and toxic smoke of a house fire in a controlled environment," says TVF&R Public Affairs Officer Brian Barker. "Although TVF&R firefighters frequently train with live fire in specially designed training props at our Training Center, there's nothing quite like gaining experience on a fire in a real home."

The home that will be burned was donated by a property owner. Firefighters have been using the home to practice search and rescue techniques and train probationary firefighters for a month. TVF&R will turn the home back over to the property owner after tomorrow's controlled burn.
