Dispatched: 10:45 PM
First arriving unit: TVF&R Engine 35 (King City Station) at 10:50 PM
Location: Woodspring Apartments, 16100 SW 113th (just off Durham Rd.)
Initial action: Recognizing the complex as senior housing, the officer on Engine 35 immediately called for a 2nd alarm bringing more firefighters and apparatus to the scene (approximately 40 total).
Officer radio description of fire: Two fully involved apartments, ground and second story, windows blown out with heavy flames showing.
Note: 9-1-1 caller indicated she heard glass breaking and was concerned a burglary was underway until she looked out the window and saw the adjacent apartment on fire. After calling 9-1-1, she alerted several neighbors who rushed from their units.
Actions: Aggressive exterior fire attack to limit spread and gain access for search for possible victims. The occupant of the ground floor apartment escaped before firefighters arrived. She credited her dog with alerting her. Neighbors told firefighters that they believed a couple was trapped in the second story apartment. Firefighters battled their way up the outside stairwell (see photo), made entry, and searched the second story apartment. A similar search was conducted in the ground floor apartment. No victims were found; everyone successfully evacuated. Outside, firefighters were working from the roof venting the blaze and working to stop it from spreading across the attic space. With the exception of some small extension into the attic of the neighboring apartment, these efforts were successful and fire loss was limited to the two heavily damaged apartment.
Injuries: None
Displaced: The heavily damaged units were home to a total of three people; they are staying with friends tonight. Several residents from adjacent units are staying with friends or receiving assistance from the Red Cross.
Investigation: In progress; no information on cause or damages at this time.
