A one-alarm fire caused considerable damage to the Dancing Dragon Chinese/American Restaurant, 1940 NE Cornell Road in Hillsboro early Thursday morning. Hillsboro Police on patrol discovered the blaze at 12:30 am and dispatchers summoned firefighters from Hillsboro Fire Department (HFD) and Tualatin Valley Fire and Rescue (TVF&R). When the first engine company arrived from HFD's Ronler Acres Fire Station, the officer reported seeing heavy smoke emanating from the air conditioning unit on the roof and smoke visible through the restaurant windows. Firefighters made a quick entry through the front doors and found heavy fire in the kitchen area. They brought the blaze under control in about 15-minutes. In all, 26 firefighters from the two agencies fought the fire. There were no injuries.
The owner, 54-year old Diane Yeeman Chan, told investigators she and her chef closed the business and left the building at about 10:15 pm Wednesday night noting nothing unusual. Fire investigators have just begun to dig through the fire debris and interview witnesses in an effort to determine the cause of the blaze. The preliminary damage estimate is $150-thousand to the restaurant contents and the building. The majority of the fire damage was contained to the kitchen with moderate smoke damage to the dining area.
