CITY OF BEAVERTON FINANCE DEPARTMENT RECEIVES NATIONAL RECOGNITION WITH BUDGET AWARD
Posted: April 24th, 2012 9:02 AM
The Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA) based in Chicago recently announced that the city of Beaverton has received the GFOA's Distinguished Budget Presentation Award for its fiscal year 2011-12 budget. This is the 24th consecutive year that the city has received this recognition.
"GFOA scrutinizes cities across North America looking for those that exemplify best budget practices," said Mayor Denny Doyle. "We continually strive to be fiscally responsible and good stewards of public funds. It's an honor to be recognized by such a prestigious nonprofit."
The award reflects the city's commitment to meet the highest principles of governmental budgeting. The city had to satisfy nationally recognized guidelines for effective budget presentation to qualify for the award. The guidelines assess how well an entity's budget serves as a policy document, financial plan, operations guide, and communications device.
"Through Beaverton's example, we hope that other entities will be encouraged to achieve excellence in budgeting," said Stephen Gauthier, GFOA's director of technical services.
To be considered, budget documents must be rated "proficient" in all four categories, and the 14 mandatory criteria within those categories.
The GFOA is a nonprofit professional association serving nearly 17,400 government finance professionals throughout North America. The GFOA's Distinguished Budget Presentation Awards Program is the only national awards program in governmental budgeting.
According to Gauthier, more than 1,250 entities received the award. "Award recipients have pioneered efforts to improve the quality of budgeting and provide an excellent example for other governments throughout North America," he added.
When a Distinguished Budget Presentation Award is granted, a Certificate of Recognition for Budget Presentation is also presented to the individual or department designated as being primarily responsible for its having achieved the award. This has been presented to Joanne Harrington, the city of Beaverton's Budget Coordinator.
