CALLING ALL THIRD-GRADERS! PGE SEEKS SIX LUCKY KIDS TO RIDE "SAFETY ROCKS" ROSE FESTIVAL PARADE FLOAT

PORTLAND, Ore. --- This year, six lucky third-graders will have a chance to experience a Rose Festival parade from one of the best seats on the route: riding on top of the "Safety Rocks" float from Portland General Electric. Featuring electrifying sights and sounds, and larger-than-life examples of common electrical safety hazards, PGE hopes to empower kids to make smart and safe choices when it comes to electricity and is looking for local students to help share the message.
To select float riders, PGE is holding a "Color Me Safe" contest for area third-graders through May 4. To participate, students submit a drawing and a short description, sharing fun, creative examples of what electrical safety means to them or how they make safe choices around electricity. Six winners will be selected, with three to ride in the PGE/SOLVE Starlight Parade, June 2 and three to ride in the Grand Floral Parade, June 9.
"Our 'Safety Rocks' float promises to bring a lot of fun to the Rose Festival parades this year, while also engaging the community in an important safety message," said Kregg Arntson, PGE's community affairs manager. "Electricity is an amazing part of our lives, but can also be dangerous, so it's imperative we help our young people be responsible and safe."
PGE's float is inspired by the utility's new school presentation, "Pedro's Path to Power," a bilingual, interactive musical produced by Oregon Children's Theatre that uses song, dance and audience participation to teach kindergarten through third-grade students about electrical safety. The float will include performers from the show, bringing characters like 7-year-old Pedro and the singing and dancing "Power" to life. To date, the production has performed for free at more than 30 schools throughout the Willamette Valley, with performances also planned for the 2012-2012 school year.
Contest entry forms are available online at www.PortlandGeneral.com/RoseFestival and need to be received by 5 p.m., May 4. The site also features a short video with ideas and inspiration for contest participants. All entries must be by third grade students, whose family receives residential electric service from PGE. Winners will be announced May 8.
