Posted: April 18th, 2012 10:05 AM

The Beaverton Downtown Association (BDA) invites you to enjoy special retail discounts, live music, raffles, art, artisan foods and shopping in downtown Beaverton on Friday, May 4 from 5-8 p.m. for the kick off of the six-month long first Friday series, sponsored by the city of Beaverton and the BDA.

As part of the series, more than 20 downtown businesses will offer extended hours of operation and most will also offer special promotions and discounts on the first Friday of every month, starting May 4 and ending Oct. 5, 2012.

A variety of gift shops, cafes, art galleries and other specialty stores will be open until 8 p.m. or later. Features, such as live music, special shopper discounts, tea tastings, historic displays, and art demonstrations, will pepper the downtown Beaverton area.

The series will mainly focus on SW Broadway, Watson and First and Second Avenues.

"We're happy to have local businesses creating this series--they're helping to make our downtown vibrant," said Mayor Denny Doyle. "This series is an exciting part of our overall downtown revitalization efforts."

This summer, Broadway will see some physical changes to the area with the installation of small trees, as well as additional lighting, new plazas, benches and bike racks. The businesses will add to this experience by offering longer hours and special promotions to ensure an enjoyable evening for visitors and shoppers alike.

"The whole idea is to stimulate community interest in shopping local, acquaint people with independent shops and restaurants in downtown Beaverton, and celebrate the diversity of food and products all just a minute from home," said BDA Promotion Committee member and Art On Broadway partner Donna Sanson.

More than 20 businesses are involved, including: OneMark Creations, A&P Kitchen, Art On Broadway Gallery, The Sub Shop, ThaiHi5 Restaurant, The Beaverton History Center, Sublimity Snow & Skate, Cal Hamreus Studio, Arthur Murray Dance Studio, Peddlers Pack, D'Carli's Restaurant, NakWon Restaurant, Avalon Salon & Spa.

Examples of special promotions and discounts: A&P will raffle off a basket of Farmers Market products; Art on Broadway will present an artist's demonstration; OneMark Creations will host a tea tasting; Arthur Murray will open to the public from 8:30-10:30 p.m.; NakWon Restaurant will offer a $2 per table discount; and roving musicians will occasionally be on hand to entertain visitors (Swingset A Cappella quartet is scheduled for May and September).
