Posted: April 24th, 2012 11:30 AM

The 2012 Leadership Beaverton class is hosting a fund-raising kickball tournament on Saturday, May 12 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at PCC Rock Creek (17705 NW Springville Road). Proceeds will help HomePlate Youth Services establish a drop-in site to homeless youth with shelter, meals, employment assistance, housing and education.

"Young people deserve to succeed in life and often that success is tied to having a stable place to call home," said Mayor Denny Doyle. "By offering a safe place to go, we protect vulnerable people from victimization."

Beaverton has the highest number of homeless students in Oregon, rising to an all-time high of 1,580. This project will provide the first steps to connect Beaverton's homeless youth with a comprehensive array of outreach services and referrals. Once connections are made, youth will be mentored by caring, trained volunteers who will assist them in make positive choices about their future.

There are still team spots and sponsorship opportunities available. To register a team or donate to this project, please visit www.homeplateyouth.org/homeruns. The cost to register a team of 10-12 players is $500.

ABOUT HOMEPLATE
In 2005, youth groups, local social service providers, community members, and the Hillsboro Police Department addressed the growing homeless youth population in Washington County by creating HomePlate, a weekly drop-in program providing a hot meal, showers, clothing, hygiene items, education information, resource referrals and support for homeless and runaway young people. Today, HomePlate is a safe and trusted place for young people (up to age 24) experiencing homelessness to access services and work toward a path of stability.
