Posted: March 27th, 2012 1:34 PM

On March 27, 2012, the Vancouver Police Department Traffic Unit kicked off the Share the Road Safety Emphasis 2012. This first safety emphasis will continue through April 30, 2012. Officers from the Vancouver Police Traffic Unit will be working various locations throughout Vancouver focusing on pedestrian safety, bike helmet law education and enforcement, and driver safety emphasis in and around crosswalks.

Over the past several months, the Traffic Unit has investigated several hit and run collisions and two fatality collisions involving vehicles and pedestrians. The Share the Road emphasis will focus on education and enforcement of laws around crosswalk safety for both pedestrians and drivers and education and enforcement of the helmet law, which requires all bicyclists, skateboarders and those riding non-motorized vehicles wear a helmet while riding in the City of Vancouver.

The Traffic Unit is committed to improving traffic safety through education and enforcement. For more information on traffic safety visit the Traffic Unit page on the Vancouver Police Department website at www.vanpolice.org.

Members of the media interested in going out with the Traffic Unit during this emphasis should contact Kim Kapp for more information on location/times of the emphasis as this information will not be publicly released.
