Alejandro (Alex) Vidales, Portland Parks & Recreation Outreach & Community Engagement Coordinator, will accept a prestigious award from the Immigrant and Refugee Community Organization (IRCO) this Friday.

Alex will accept a We Are Portland award from IRCO as thanks for his dedicated and compassionate work with Portland immigrant and refugee families. An immigrant himself, Alex created and coordinated the Portland World Cup Soccer Tournament & Cultural Celebration at PP&R's Delta Park last summer. More than 200 kids from age 14 to 18 competed in the tournament, which celebrated the city's cultural diversity.

WHAT: Immigrant and Refugee Community Organization Awards
WHEN: 9:00 AM on Friday, 3/23/12
WHERE: IRCO is at 10301 NE Glisan Street (97220) in East Portland.

Last year IRCO began recognizing community members like Alex with We Are Portland awards. On Friday, Portland City Commissioner Amanda Fritz will be honoring Portlanders like Alex who help integrate newcomers into the life of the city.

"More specifically," reads an IRCO release, "we want to model terrific partnerships between newcomer community elders and activists and City of Portland staff. Partnerships that move our families toward thinking of Portland's vigorous streets, our lovely parks and rec centers, our precious watershed, and community policing officers --- as belonging to them."

Polo Catalani of the Office of Equity and Human Rights, says "Alex cares for our families and communities. This award is both an effort to model how he's doing equity, every working day, and a way of noting he's doing so much without a lot of systemic help, and a celebration of how our communities respond when engaged."
