Two people were injured Wednesday night in a head-on traffic crash on Highway 30 near Columbia City. The crash resulted in a 90 minute highway closure and one driver being cited by Oregon State Police (OSP) for traffic violations.
According to OSP Senior Trooper Jeromy Hasenkamp, on March 7, 2012 at approximately 7:38 p.m. a 1986 Jeep CJ6 driven by DAVID W. KROM, age 69, from northwest Portland, was westbound on Highway 30 near milepost 36 when it crossed the centerline into the eastbound lane. An eastbound 2000 Volkswagen Jetta driven by BRIANA L. HOGUE, age 20, from St. Helens, tried taking evasive action to the right shoulder but was struck head-on by the Jeep. After impact, the Jeep rolled before coming to a stop.
HOGUE was using safety restraints and her car's airbag deployed. She was transported by Columbia River Fire & Rescue to St. John's Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
KROM was not using safety restraints. He was transported by Columbia River Fire & Rescue to Legacy Emanuel Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.
Subsequent to the investigation, Hasenkamp cited KROM for Driving While Suspended, Fail to Drive on Right Side of Highway, and Failure to Wear Safety Belt.
