March is Red Cross Month, and this month the American Red Cross is asking everyone to help people in need by supporting the lifesaving services it provides.

"Please remember those who need our help. Support the Red Cross by making a donation, becoming a volunteer, taking a class, or giving blood," said Maree Wacker, Regional Executive of the Oregon Red Cross "We want to thank everyone for their generosity, which has enabled us help people here at home, across the United States, and around the world."

'March is Red Cross Month' was first proclaimed in 1943 by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Since that time, every president has designated March as Red Cross Month. The American Red Cross is synonymous with helping people, and has been doing so for more than 130 years.

The Red Cross responds to nearly 70,000 disasters a year in this country, providing shelter, food, emotional support and other necessities to those affected. Eleven times each week, somewhere in Oregon, volunteers help a family who has lost everything in a house fire or other disaster.

The Red Cross provides 24-hour support to members of the military, veterans and their families. Eight times a day in Oregon, the Red Cross connects deployed service members with their families.

The Red Cross collects and distributes more than 40 percent of the nation's blood supply; 715 times each day in Oregon, someone receives a blood transfusion from an Oregon Red Cross donor.

The Red Cross trains more than 9 million people, almost 100,000 in Oregon, every year, in first aid, water safety and other life-saving skills.

The Red Cross is not a government agency and relies on donations of time, money and blood to do its work. An average of 91 cents of every dollar given to the Red Cross is invested in helping the people the Red Cross services.

"Red Cross Month is a great time for people to learn more about our mission," Wacker said. "Their support enables us to continue our work, both here at home and across the globe."

The Oregon Chapters of the American Red Cross have a number of activities planned for Red Cross Month, including celebrations of local citizens being honored as heroes at the Fred Meyer Breakfast of Champions in Portland on March 6th as well as heroes events presented by Fred Meyer in Medford on March 14th, in Eugene on March 15th and in Bend on March 28th. We are honored to once again have Fred Meyer as our statewide title sponsor for all heroes events.

The Oregon Red Cross will also be taking part in tsunami preparedness functions on the coast throughout the month, as well as participating in emergency preparedness events around the state.

Contact your local chapter for additional details on these and other Red Cross events in your area.
