West Linn Police honor Dale and Jennifer Cook this evening at the West Linn City Council meeting with the presentation of the LIFE SAVING AWARD. They will be presented with the award at the Council meeting which begins at 6:30 P.M. at West Linn City Hall 22500 Salamo Rd. West Linn, OR 97068

The victim and his family will be at the council meeting this evening.

On Friday, October 14, 2011, at about 10:40 A.M., Dale and Jennifer Cook were driving along Willamette Dr. near Pimlico Dr. when they saw a FedEx delivery truck waiting to enter the highway. Mr. Cook mentioned to his wife that the driver did not look so good. He watched out his rearview mirror as the delivery truck rolled across the highway, narrowly avoiding cross traffic, it then careened over a retaining wall and came to rest across the driveway of 2710 Magone Lane, nearly striking the home. It was apparent to the Cooks that the driver was in distress.

Mr. Cook stopped their car and ran to the truck with his wife. He found the driver; Mr. Gerald Hassle slumped over in the passenger seat. Mr. Cook determined that Mr. Hassle had no pulse and was not breathing. The Cooks' children were in their car.

Mr. Cook pulled Mr. Hassle from the truck, placed him on the ground, and along with Mrs. Cook they initiated Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).

Calls to the 9-1-1 center initially reported an unknown injury crash, and Officer Mike Francis, Sergeants Wade Corbin and Neil Hennelly responded with TVF&R Engine 58. While responding, dispatch advised that people on the scene were performing CPR on the driver.

Upon the arrival of Engine 58, and later the ambulance, advanced life support measures were taken and Mr. Hassle was transported to the hospital.

The emergency room physician told Ofc. Francis that had it not been for the rapid application of CPR by the Cooks, Mr. Hassle would not have survived.

The swift actions by both Dale and Jennifer Cook are highly commendable, and they made a significant and lasting contribution to the Hassle family.
