Pacific Power merrily adds a green twinkle to Dayton's holiday festivities
"The Town that Still Believes" also believes in renewable energy
DAYTON, Wash. - With its historic buildings and small town enthusiasm, it's appropriate for Dayton's holiday theme to be "The Town that Still Believes." With an assist from Pacific Power's Blue Sky renewable energy, Dayton is a town that believes in renewable energy as well.
To cast a sustainable shimmer on the traditional festivities beginning Nov. 25, 12 megawatts of Blue Sky renewable energy is being acquired to offset the energy used by holiday lights in Flour Mill Park and on Main Street.
The Christmas Kickoff also includes the lighting of Main Street, a live production of "A Christmas Carol" at the Liberty Theater, pictures with Santa, hayrides, caroling, a lighted parade and a Christmas market at the state's oldest train depot in downtown Dayton.
The first night of the celebration culminates with the fabulous Friday Night Winter Fireworks Display, sponsored by Pacific Power.
"Dayton has such a wonderful, small-town holiday feel with its restored Main Street and the businesses that participate in decorating," said Claudia Nysoe, executive director of Dayton's Chamber of Commerce. "The interest in renewable power really has increased in Dayton with the growing wind power industry here and the recent successful Blue Sky renewable energy challenge. Having Blue Sky for our Christmas lights just adds to the enthusiasm."
The amount of Blue Sky power acquired for the seasonal festivities has the same environmental benefit as planting 169 trees or not driving a car 14,621 miles (about 220 round trips from Dayton to Walla Walla).
"Blue Sky is made up of renewable energy generated by wind farms and other sustainable resources," said Bill Clemens, regional community manager for Pacific Power. "While Pacific Power already produces renewable energy for its system at facilities like Marengo just out of town, Blue Sky gives customers a chance to help bring even more green power online."
