A 52-year old Salem-area woman was seriously injured Wednesday afternoon when her sport utility vehicle crashed into the back of an unloaded log truck stopped in construction work zone on Highway 140 about 30 miles west of Lakeview. Oregon State Police (OSP) is continuing the investigation.

According to OSP Trooper Curtis Weaver, on August 17, 2011 at approximately 4:50 p.m. an unloaded log truck driven by KENNETH W. ESKILDSON, age 47, from Klamath Falls, was stopped westbound on Highway 140 near milepost 67 for a highway flagger in a work zone. The highway flagger was holding a stop sign controlling westbound traffic when a 2005 Mercury Mariner sport utility vehicle was seen approaching westbound and wasn't going to stop. The highway flagger ran off the road as the Mercury crashed into the back of the unloaded log truck.

The back of the log truck penetrated into the Mercury's passenger compartment trapping and seriously injuring driver DEBRA LYNN SPARBER, age 52, from Salem. ODOT employees provided initial aid to the trapped driver until police and medical personnel arrived. Emergency medical services and ambulance personnel from Lakeview extricated SPARBER from her vehicle.

SPARBER was transported by air ambulance to Sky Lakes Medical Center in Klamath Falls. She told Weaver her cruise control was set at 55 mph prior to the crash. Hospital officials said her condition is improving and her injuries are non-life threatening. Her small dog survived the crash.

ESKILDSON was not injured.

OSP was assisted at the scene by ODOT, Lake County Sheriff's Office and Lakeview Disaster Unit.
