WOMAN ARRESTED FOR FALSIFYING SEXUAL ASSAULT REPORT

RELEASE DATE: Aug. 12, 2011
CONTACT PERSON: Officer John Rasmussen, Public Information Officer
CASE NUMBER: 11-708211

In response to a Multnomah County Grand Jury indictment, 35-year-old Gresham resident Danielle Elizabeth Hayes was arrested today on two misdemeanor charges of Initiating a False Report after she confessed to lying about being sexually assaulted near Gresham's Borders bookstore.

On July 25 at 5:05 p.m., Gresham Police responded to the area of Borders, 687 NW 12th Street, Gresham, on the report of a sexual assault. A distraught Hayes told police she was getting into her blue minivan, parked along the west side of Borders, when two men grabbed her and pulled her to a secluded area behind the store and sexually assaulted her. Multiple police officers responded and police detectives were called to the scene. The public was put on alert and asked to assist in identifying the assailants.

Following an extensive investigation; including dozens of hours worked by officers and detectives, the involvement of the Oregon State Crime Lab, the Multnomah County District Attorney's Office and the citizens of Gresham, Hayes has confessed to making up the entire story in an elaborate attempt to cover-up personal indiscretions.

With the initial confession came additional lies, resulting in the second charge. Hayes changed her story and said she had really been assaulted by an acquaintance earlier that day. That story unraveled too with the examination of her text message conversations with the alleged suspect, showing their contact was consensual.

The City of Gresham Police Department wishes to thank the citizens of Gresham for their concern and support during the investigation of this case. This is a unique case and the police department remains committed to solving all sexual assault crimes; supporting abuse survivors while helping to hold the perpetrators accountable for their actions.

No further information is available at this time.
