Two Phoenix-area residents died Sunday afternoon in a two vehicle collision on Interstate 5 about one mile south of Rogue River. The victims' pickup came to rest in the center median after rolling multiple times. Their names are released in this update.

According to Sergeant First Class Mark Byrd, on August 21, 2011 at approximately 3:11 p.m., a 2006 Ford Ranger pickup driven by FRANK ALBERT RINGGARD, age 68, from Phoenix, was southbound on Interstate 5 near milepost 46 in the right lane overtaking a commercial truck. According to witnesses, the Ford pickup attempted to change to the left lane and clipped the front of a 2004 Toyota Camry driven MONA JEAN SULLIVAN, age 59, from Bonanza.

As both vehicles lost control, the Ford pickup traveled into the grass center median and rolled several times. RINGGARD, who was not using safety restraints, was ejected from the pickup. The 81-year old female passenger, HELEN R. SORENA, who was using safety restraints, was not ejected. Both were pronounced deceased at the scene.

The Toyota also traveled into the center grass median where it spun out of control before coming to a stop. MONA SULLIVAN was not injured. Her passenger/husband, DANIEL L. SULLIVAN, age 61, was also not injured. They were using safety restraints.

OSP troopers from the Central Point Area Command office are continuing the investigation with the assistance of the Jackson County Medical Examiners Office.

Troopers were assisted at the scene by ODOT, Rogue River Fire Department, Rogue River Police Department, and Jackson County Fire District 1.
