A 17-year old Independence girl was seriously injured Saturday afternoon when the car she was riding in lost control following a tire malfunction on Highway 22E east of Gates. Oregon State Police (OSP) is continuing the investigation.

According to OSP Trooper James Ward, on August 20, 2011 at approximately 10:00 a.m. a 1999 Saturn passenger car driven by MARLY E. LITTLEFIELD, age 20, from Independence, was westbound on Highway 22E near milepost 34 when tire tread separated from one of the tires. LITTLEFIELD lost control of the car, traveled off the roadway and down an embankment where it rolled at least once before coming to rest on its top.

Passenger OLIVIA P. CARR, age 17, from Independence, was seriously injured. She was transported by LifeFlight to Oregon Health & Sciences University.

LITTLEFIELD received minor injuries and was transported by ground ambulance to Santiam Hospital.

OSP troopers from the Salem Area Command office were assisted at the scene by Gates Rural Fire Protection District.
