An 85-year old Forest Grove man was seriously injured Wednesday afternoon when he lost control of his car on Highway 6 about a half mile east of Brown's Camp, traveled off an approximate 120 foot embankment and crashed. Oregon State Police, Washington County Sheriff's Office and Forest Grove Fire Department high-angle Rescue personnel worked together to rescue the man prior to his transport to Legacy Emanuel Medical Center.
Preliminary information indicates on August 17, 2011 at approximately 4:30 p.m. a 2002 Toyota Camry driven by PETER ROWAN, age 85, from Forest Grove, was eastbound on Highway 6 near milepost 32 when it traveled onto the gravel shoulder negotiating a left curve. ROWAN over-corrected and the Toyota traveled across the highway, though a gravel pullout and over an embankment down a very steep, wooded slope approximately 120 feet before stopping.
A motorist driving through the area shortly afterward saw a smoke of dust and skid marks but didn't see any vehicle. There was no cell phone service in the area, so the man drove to Lee's Camp Store about eleven miles west of the scene and called 9-1-1.
OSP troopers, a Washington County deputy and Forest Grove Fire Department personnel responded to the scene. The trooper and deputy arrived first, moved down the steep slope to the car and provided initial emergency medical care to ROWAN. Fire personnel arrived about 15 minutes later and subsequently cut the car's roof off. Officers and fire personnel worked together to bring the man back up to the highway shoulder about an hour later.
ROWAN was transported by LifeFlight to Legacy Emanuel Medical Center.
More information may be available by Thursday afternoon.
