At the request of Oregon State Police (OSP), Ontario Police Department is continuing the investigation into an OSP-involved non-injury traffic crash that occurred Thursday night in Ontario. The two-vehicle crash occurred as an OSP trooper was responding with emergency lights activated to cover another trooper who had stopped a vehicle associated with a reported drive-by shooting in Ontario.
On August 18, 2011 at approximately 8:10 p.m. the Ontario Police Department responded to shots fired in the 300 block of NW 3rd Street in Ontario. According to Ontario police, witnesses observed a passenger car drive through the area when a subject allegedly fired a gun at the vehicle from the area of his home. That vehicle fled the area and was located and stopped shortly afterward by an OSP trooper.
At approximately 8:38 p.m., Trooper Kevin Harris was responding in a marked OSP patrol car with emergency lights activated to back up the trooper who stopped the occupied vehicle associated with the reported drive-by shooting stopped. The vehicle had four occupants inside.
Harris was northbound on N. Verde Drive approaching the intersection with NW 4th Avenue. Traffic on N. Verde Drive was yielding to the emergency lights on the OSP patrol car. There was not a stop sign on N. Verde Drive and as the trooper entered the intersection, a Dodge Neon driven by Jaime Rodriguez, age 24, from Ontario, pulled out from a stop sign into the path of the trooper's patrol car.
Harris attempted to avoid the Dodge but was unable to and both vehicles collided. After impact, the OSP patrol car traveled through a pump station, electrical box, and fence and into a large tree on the northeast corner of the intersection.
Harris and Rodriguez were not injured. Harris has been with OSP for approximately 2 years.
OSP requested Ontario police investigate the traffic crash. Questions regarding the traffic crash investigation, as well as the drive-by shooting investigation, should be directed to Ontario Police Department at 541-889-7266.
An Ontario Police Department news release and suspect photograph regarding the drive-by shooting case is provided with this release.
