A 19-year old Portland male was arrested Sunday evening after he fled on foot while attempting to elude police officers in the Clackamas area. The suspect was captured when a Portland police K-9 led officers to the suspect.
On August 21, 2011 at approximately 7:50 p.m. Oregon State Police (OSP) Trooper Chris Schinnerer saw a black Chevrolet Silverado pickup enter Interstate 205 northbound from Highway 224 traveling at a high rate of speed, disobeying traffic control devices and passing other vehicles on the shoulder. The trooper activated the OSP patrol car emergency lights to stop the pickup but it failed to yield, accelerated and attempted to elude southbound on 82nd Drive.
The pickup rear-ended a vehicle at the intersection of 82nd Drive and SE Jennifer Street, and then continued until losing control and crashing into a berry bush field near SE Evelyn Street. The driver fled on foot as officers from OSP, Clackamas County Sheriff's Office and Gladstone Police Department moved into position to establish a secure perimeter.
The suspect was captured a short distance away from where he abandoned the pickup after being tracked by a Portland police K-9 and handler.
The suspect, CARLOS U. VERA, age 19, from northeast Portland, was arrested for Hit & Run, Reckless Driving, Recklessly Endangering Another Person, Felony Attempted to Elude in a Vehicle, and Misdemeanor Attempt to Elude on Foot.
The driver of the vehicle rear-ended by the suspect had minor injuries. Information regarding this driver is not available.
