GRESHAM, Ore. - In the early morning hours of July 24 Gresham Fire and Emergency Services responded to reports of a fire at a mobile home court located at 2500 N.E. 205th Avenue in Fairview.
Firefighters arrived at 4:08 a.m. to find the wooden deck of a mobile home smoldering after neighbors used a hose to extinguish a fire caused by an unattended barbecue. Firefighters discovered that embers dropped from the barbecue to the wooden deck causing the fire.
Eleven year-old Joshua Garoutte noticed fire and alerted his grandmother, Marilyn Garoutte who then called 911.
Firefighters extinguished the smoldering deck and then removed the fire damaged deck and supports from the mobile home belonging to Virgil Welch. There were no injuries and damage was contained to the deck and its support structures.
Gresham Fire would like commend Joshua for his quick thinking and believe his alertness prevented the fire from spreading to the home of Mr. Welch.
Gresham Fire would also like to remind residents not to use barbecues on decks, balconies or over other flammable materials. According the National Fire Protection Association roughly 28% of home structure fires involving grills and barbecues started on an exterior balcony or porch.
