POST-FOURTH OF JULY HOLIDAY WEEKEND STATISTICS

Preliminary information from known fatal traffic crashes indicates one person died during the 78-hour Fourth of July 2011 holiday reporting period between 6:00 p.m., Friday, July 1st, and 11:59 p.m., Monday, July 4th, on Oregon roads. According to ODOT's Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS), since 1970 there has only been one fatal-free Fourth of July holiday weekend (1979) and one time when there was a single fatality (2001).
The single known reported fatal traffic crash occurred July 4, 2011 on Fields Denio Road and Vanhorn Creek about four miles north of the Oregon border in Harney County. A 30-year old adult male driver died following a single vehicle rollover traffic crash. Questions regarding the crash investigation should be directed to Harney County Sheriff's Office.
OSP troopers reported an 80 percent jump in the number of DUII arrests in comparison to last year's Fourth of July holiday weekend. Troopers reported 110 DUII arrests over the holiday reporting period, up from 60 DUII arrests reported last year. Arrest statistics provided by OSP dispatch centers show the following OSP offices reporting four or more DUII arrests:
* Coos Bay Area Command - 11 DUII arrests
* Portland Area Command - 9 DUII arrests
* Springfield Area Command - 9 DUII arrests
* Klamath Falls Area Command - 8 DUII arrests
* Central Point Area Command - 7 DUII arrests
* Astoria Area Command - 5 DUII arrests
* Salem Area Command - 5 DUII arrests
* Roseburg Area Command - 4 DUII arrests
* Bend Area Command - 4 DUII arrests
* Newport Area Command - 4 DUII arrests
* North Plains Work Site - 4 DUII arrests
Two DUII-related incidents of note over the holiday weekend:
* On July 3rd at approximately 4:30 a.m. OSP troopers assisted Washington State Patrol (WSP) troopers with the arrest of ANDREY V. TASMALY, age 22, from Vancouver, Washington. WSP attempted to stop a 2001 BMW 330i in Vancouver when it attempted to elude at speeds reportedly near 130 mph. The car fled southbound on Interstate 205 until it became mechanically disabled near Johnson Creek Boulevard when OSP and WSP arrested its driver, TASMALY. He was later lodged in the Clackamas County Jail for DUII, Felony Attempt to Elude in a Vehicle, Reckless Driving, two counts of Recklessly Endangering Another Person, and Misdemeanor Driving While Suspended. He was also cited in Oregon for Violation of the Basic Rule in Excess of 100 mph, Refusing a Breath Test, and Possession of an Open Container of Alcohol in a Motor Vehicle. * OSP troopers arrested BRIAN CARL WEGNER, age 50, from Cascade Locks, related to an investigation into a July 4 traffic crash that injured 7 people in a van westbound on Interstate 84 near milepost 46. At approximately 9:09 p.m. WEGNER was driving a 1996 Porsche 911 at speeds reported in excess of 100 mph prior to the crash when it sideswiped a van whose driver was attempting to change lanes while completing a pass of a commercial truck crash. WEGNER fled the crash scene on foot and was followed by a witness to his residence where OSP troopers and Hood River County deputies arrested him. WEGNER was later lodged in the Northern Oregon Regional Correctional Facility (NORCOR) for DUII, Reckless Driving, Felony Hit & Run, and seven counts of Recklessly Endangering Another Person. According to ODOT FARS, the Fourth of July holiday period is the deadliest holiday period of the year on Oregon roads. Nearly 300 people have died on Oregon roads during this holiday period since 1970. Last year, three people died in two separate fatal traffic crashes.
