On 07/02/11 at 0022 hours, EMGET officers Burkeen and Friderich were north bound on NE 162 when they saw a group of 6-8 people running west across 162nd from 222 NE 162. One of the males in the group was covered in blood. The officers chased the uncooperative 15 year old for several minutes before subduing him and getting him necessary medical attention.

As the investigation unfolded, officers traced the blood trail from the juvenile, back to the Cavalier Apartments at 222 NE 162nd to a unit occupied by Magnum Kalson and Sara Benfit. Officers learned Kalson had been outside when the group arrived near the fence outside of Kalson's apartment. Words were exchanged between the group and Kalson. A 15 year old from the group jumped over the fence to attack Kalson. Others in the group followed and chased the retreating Kalson back into his apartment where a fight ensued. During the fight, the 15 year old entered the bedroom of the sleeping Benfit and dragged her from her bed before returning to continue the assault on Kalson.

As members of the group continued to assault Kalson, he was able to get hold of a knife to fend off the attackers. The 15 year old who started the melee received a slicing wound to the back of his head approximately 6" long requiring a trip to Emmanuel Hospital for treatment. The group scattered out of the apartment, ran into the street in front of the patrol car driven by the officers.

Kalson received injuries to his face and numerous abrasions not requiring medical attention. Benfit was not injured in the attack.

3 adults listed above were lodged at jail and 3 juveniles were transported to and lodged at JDH resulting from their mob like actions. Suspect Kelty was also charged with attempt assault 1 as he tried to stab Kalson in the stomach during the fight. There are no outstanding suspects.

Gresham Police urge you to use caution when confronting anyone on the street for any reason. Attacks of this type are not uncommon and we recommend contacting police in these types of situations for assistance.
