GRESHAM, Ore. - To honor the victims of the September 11 terrorist attacks, Gresham Fire and Emergency Services and Gresham Police Department will display and sign a "Flag of Honor" with the names of the nearly 3,000 lives lost ten years ago. The flag will be unfurled on Thursday, July 28 at 7:30 a.m. at 1333 NW Eastman Parkway in front of the Public Safety Building.
"Raising and signing the Flag of Honor provides an opportunity for remembrance and reflection," said Fire Chief Scott Lewis. "It is our small way of honoring the victims and our brothers and sisters who made the ultimate sacrifice on that tragic day."
The flag is being passed to among different organizations that wish to honor the victims of the attacks. Participating groups include sailors on the USS New York, employees at Boeing in Gresham and a group of Navy Seals from San Diego. Once signed, the flag will fly from a ladder truck at a Patriots Day Field of Flags event at Salem's Riverfront Park from Sept. 8 through Sept. 11. The flag is 20' x 30'. After the event the flag will be donated to Gresham Fire and Emergency Services for use at future events.
