GRESHAM, Oregon - This summer Gresham transportation crews will undertake a record level of pavement maintenance as part of a $3 million investment in residential streets. This summer paving push is part of The Road Ahead a top City Council priority outlined in the 2011 Council Work Plan. One of the driving factors behind this push is residents' concern about the condition of neighborhood streets.
"The Road Ahead is an important effort to safeguard the community's investment while we strategize how to solve the broader road-maintenance issue," Mayor Shane T. Bemis said. "We think residents are going to like the results, while gaining a better understanding of the long-term challenges facing our road system."
The record amount of summer work is made possible by a one-time increase in two state funding sources, gas taxes and vehicle registration fees. Additionally, the City Council supported focusing transportation priorities this year on residential streets.
Over the course of the summer approximately 500 street sections will receive treatment. Treatments will vary based on what each street needs. Residents can expect to see crews using pavement-preservation techniques such as crack and slurry seals and repair or replacement tactics like chip seal, grind and patch and overlays.
City crews will also focus on pothole repair this summer. Residents can report potholes by calling 503-618-2626. Callers should have the location of the pothole, including the nearest cross street and/or address available. The City will fill potholes within 72 hours.
Temporary traffic delays are unavoidable during paving work, but the City is working to minimize any inconvenience by mailing notices to residents and businesses, using electronic message boards, and posting notices in newspapers and on the City's website.
