A commercial truck fire closed Interstate 5 northbound lanes in the Siskiyou Pass about 30 minutes Thursday evening. The truck's driver was not injured and Oregon State Police (OSP) troopers are completing the investigation into the cause of the fire.
According to OSP First Sergeant Mark Byrd, on June 9, 2011 at approximately 6:45 p.m. a 2004 commercial truck pulling a trailer loaded with produce driven by RUPENDER SINGH BRAR, age 25, from Fremont, California was northbound on Interstate 5 near milepost 4 when it and pulled onto the shoulder at a "brake check" area. This location is used by commercial truck drivers to pullover and inspect their brakes before beginning their descent down the Siskiyou Pass.
When BRAR stopped, another truck driver banged on his door to alert him the truck's undercarriage was on fire. BRAR got out of the truck as both truck and trailer became fully engulfed in flames.
Jackson County Fire District 5 responded to control the fire while OSP, ODOT and Jackson County Sheriff's Office closed the northbound lanes. After 30 minutes, one lane was opened and northbound traffic was limited to a single lane until debris and heavy smoke subsided.
BRAR was driving for H&A Tran Inc. from Stockton, California. He was enroute to Portland to deliver the load of produce.
