Two California men were injured, one seriously, Thursday afternoon when their pickup traveled off Highway 58 about five miles east of Lowell and collided with a tree. The men were extricated from the pickup by firefighters from Oakridge, Dexter and Lowell fire departments before being transported to a hospital.
According to Oregon State Police (OSP) Trooper Caleb Ratliff, on June 16, 2011 at approximately 4:56 p.m. a 2006 Toyota Tacoma pickup driven by BILL INTHAVONG, age 58, from Sacramento, California was westbound on Highway 58 near milepost 20 when it attempted to pass a commercial truck and semi-trailer. While passing, the pickup encountered an approaching eastbound vehicle and in an effort to avoid a collision the pickup's driver steered off the side of the highway. The pickup traveled through the Goodman Creek trailhead parking lot, down a short embankment and then rolled onto its passenger side head-on into a tree.
BILL INTHAVONG and passenger HOME INTHAVONG, age 53, also from Sacramento, were extricated by firefighters. Both were using safety restraints.
Both men were transported to Sacred Heart Medical Center at RiverBend in Springfield for treatment. BILL INTHAVONG was transported by Oakridge Fire Department ambulance with minor injuries and HOME INTHAVONG by LifeFlight with serious, non-life threatening injuries.
Highway 58 was closed for about ten minutes for LifeFlight response.
Trooper Ratliff is continuing the investigation. In addition to the above mentioned fire departments, OSP was assisted by ODOT at the scene.
