Two men were injured, one critically, Tuesday evening when the motorcycle they were riding lost control and crashed into a concrete barrier on the northbound Interstate 5 exit to Highway 217. Oregon State Police (OSP) is continuing the investigation into the cause of the crash.
According to Trooper Nigel Schnackenberg, on June 28, 2011 at approximately 7:12 p.m. a Harley Davidson motorcycle operated by STEVEN POWERS, age 46, from North Plains, was northbound on Interstate 5 taking the exit to Highway 217 when POWERS lost control. POWERS and passenger CHRISTOPHER THIEL, age 19, from Salem, were ejected from the motorcycle before it crashed into a concrete barrier on the right shoulder. The motorcycle continued about 300 feet before coming to an uncontrolled stop.
Trooper Schackenberg along with a Tigard police officer and two people who stopped to help provided initial emergency medical care to both men before medics arrived. POWERS was transported to Oregon Health & Sciences University where he is in critical condition. THIEL was transported to Meridian Park Hospital with minor injuries.
Both men were wearing protective helmets.
OSP was assisted at the scene by Tigard Police Department, Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue, and ODOT.
