Milwaukie Police Hosts Bike-Giveaway to Community Kids
On Monday, June 6 at 10:00 a.m., the Milwaukie Police Department will give bicycles to 8 children attending Seth Lewelling Elementary School. Milwaukie Chief of Police Bob Jordan and other police personnel will deliver 20 bicycles to the school, and let each child choose which bicycle best fits his or her size and personal preference. Each child will also receive a free bicycle helmet, security lock, and flashing bicycle safety beacon light.
Throughout year the police department responds to dozens of calls about abandoned bicycles. Each found bicycle's serial number is checked to determine whether the property had been reported stolen. The police department must hold the abandoned property for a designated period of time. The police property room is commonly overflowing with unclaimed bicycles. With no known owners, the bikes must eventually be discarded.
The Bike Commuter, a Sellwood neighborhood bike shop, generously volunteered to refurbish some of the unclaimed bikes, making sure all the tires, brakes, and steering were in working order. Milwaukie Police Chief Bob Jordan then asked the principal of Seth Lewelling Elementary School to help find children that didn't have, but wanted a bicycle. The Milwaukie Public Safety Advisory Committee also helped with this new project.
Eight students will get to select a free bicycle on Monday morning at 10:00 a.m. After the 8 children choose their favorites from 20 bicycles, the remainder will be placed in storage to be offered to other students next year.
This is a pilot program that with luck will become a yearly event. The Milwaukie Police Department hopes to offer more free bikes to children who need them, and anticipates the concept of the free bike-giveaway will expand to other elementary schools next year.
Seth Lewelling Elementary School is located at 5325 SE Logus Road, Milwaukie, Oregon 97222.
