RELEASE DATE: June 3, 2011
CONTACT PERSON: Officer John Rasmussen, Public Information Officer
CASE NUMBER: 11-705446
A Gresham man is charged with Aggravated Murder stemming from a disturbance call late last month, in which officers found a woman in medical distress. The woman later died in the hospital from head injuries.
On May 20, 2011 at 9:26 p.m., Gresham Police were dispatched to the 17700 block of East Burnside on a report of a disturbance. When officers arrived they encountered 58-year-old BARBARA NADINE SMALLEY of Gresham, unconscious in the living room of an apartment. SMALLEY was taken via ambulance to Emanuel Hospital with a traumatic brain injury and later succumbed to her injuries.
Police also encountered JOHN COLEMAN HARDAWAY in the apartment; no other people were present that night. He was arrested at that time on a parole detainer and lodged at MCDC. As part of an ongoing investigation being conducted by the East County Major Crimes Team, HARDAWAY has been charged in the murder of SMALLEY. No other information is available at this time but an updated press release will be sent out early next week.
