Oregon State Police (OSP) troopers are continuing the investigation into Wednesday's late afternoon six-vehicle traffic crash on Highway 97 south of Redmond that resulted in the death of one person and injuries to three other people. The crash closed the highway for 2 1/2 hours.

According to OSP Trooper Jacob Lorentz, on June 8, 2011 at approximately 5:30 p.m. a 2007 Hyundai driven by JANET E. CHURCHES, age 50, from Redmond, was southbound on Highway 97 near milepost 124 when she attempted to change lanes and collided with a southbound 2008 Chevrolet Trailblazer driven by STEPHEN E. COLEMAN, age 49, from Redmond.

After the initial impact, CHURCHES lost control and spun into the left northbound lane where she collided nearly head-on with a 1998 Subaru Legacy driven by JUDY A. STOLTZ, age 57, from Redmond. Another northbound vehicle, a 2008 Dodge Avenger driven by TERRI A. BRINKLEY, age 34, from Prineville, crashed into the passenger side of the Hyundai. A third northbound vehicle, a 1980 Toyota pickup driven by SHAWN PALMER, age 32, from Redmond, collided with the rear of the Dodge before the Toyota was struck by a 1998 Subaru Impreza driven by ELEVINA PALM, age 20, from Portland.

CHURCHES was pronounced deceased at the scene.

STOLTZ was transported by Air Link to St. Charles Medical Center in Bend with serious injuries.

BRINKLEY was transported by ground ambulance to St. Charles Medical Center in Bend with unknown injuries. PALMER was taken by a private party to the same hospital with unknown injuries.

PALM and COLEMAN were not injured.

All involved drivers were using safety restraints.

OSP troopers from the Bend Area Command office are continuing the investigation.

Deschutes County Sheriffs Office, Redmond Police Department, Redmond EMS, Deschutes County EMS, and ODOT assisted at the scene. Two lanes were opened about 8:00 p.m. until the on-scene investigation was finished.
