A Salem man faces several charges following an alcohol-involved Wednesday night rollover crash and subsequent vehicle fire south of Cottage Grove. The driver received non-life threatening injuries and Oregon State Police (OSP) troopers are continuing the investigation into the crash that occurred in an active construction work site and was witnessed by highway workers.

According to OSP Trooper Todd Cutsforth, on June 8, 2011 at approximately 10:37 p.m. troopers from the Springfield Area Command responded to a single vehicle crash southbound on Interstate 5 near milepost 169. Witnesses told responding troopers that a 1998 Honda Accord driven by MICHAEL ROBERT PETERS, age 53, from Salem, was southbound traveling a very high rate of speed, entered a slight curve and lost control. The Honda traveled off the west shoulder, slid up a dirt embankment under the Martins Creek Road overpass before rolling back down the embankment and coming to rest on it side. The Honda then caught fire and quickly became fully engulfed in flames.

PETERS got out of the Honda prior to the fire. He was transported to Sacred Heart Medical Center at RiverBend by South Lane Fire and was treated for non-life threatening injuries.

PETERS was later issued citations to appear in Lane County Circuit Court for DUII, Reckless Driving and Reckless Endangering Another Person.
